Intermittent Fasting, one month update

I have been doing this intermittent fasting thing for about a month consistently. I haven’t taken any days off, and it’s been pretty easy. I don’t think that I’ve been doing it long enough to see huge changes, but I don’t have a ton of weight to lose so I expect it to take a little bit longer.  This post contains affiliate links and the updated privacy information can be found here.

On date night, out past my fasting time...

The 16 hours of fasting and eight hours of eating protocol seemed to fit into my lifestyle the best, though there are other options

Honestly, it’s been pretty easy. We usually eat dinner at about 5 PM, so by 6 o’clock I can be done eating for the day, plus it keeps me from eating dessert (which is my weakness). Now that’s not to say I won’t have dessert, if we’re out, or it’s during the time frame. But it keeps me from eating late dessert.

Before starting the fasting, there were many mornings where I end up skipping breakfast, because I just can’t get out the door in a timely fashion (with the kids). Waiting until 10 AM to 10:30 AM sometimes to break my fast isn’t really that big of a deal.

What I consume during the fast

I still have plain tea and water, I bought myself a variety of teas, and that made kind of a fun thing for every day.  Although you can have black coffee, it isn't my jam.  During my eating period, I just eat normally.  That usually consists of leftovers, or something equally lame for lunch, and whatever I am making for dinner.  If you follow me on Instagram, I have been trying Sunbasket, and I also make family favorites like this...its just normal stuff, though we try to stay away from too many processed foods (as I shake the premade meatballs into my instant pot for dinner-HA!).

Results:

I do not own a scale, I have to just come out and say that, but I do go by how my clothes are fitting. Since I started, my clothes are fitting better. I overindulged a LOT over Christmas, and without being able to work out (because of my surgeries), it was easy to notice that my clothes were tight.

After I started feeling better from my last surgery, you can read all about that here, I have been doing the elliptical five days a week for 30 minutes, without using my arms for obvious reasons. Again, I don’t have a scale but I feel stronger and I can see a little muscle definition that I didn’t have before. That makes me happy.

Rejecting the diet culture.

I’ve also been doing some reading, and some thinking about intuitive eating. Getting rid of the diet culture, the shaming for not liking my body the way it is. I’m never going to be a bikini model, it doesn’t matter how much Paleo, our whole 30 I do.  And it's not only that, the self hatred that I see when I look in the mirror has to change.  I have birthed, and fed three kids.  Damn, stop being so hard on myself.  Clearly still need to work on this.

I also realize that when I deprive myself of something on a diet, that’s the thing that I crave, and it drives me absolutely bonkers. The other thing is meal planning didn’t work for me. Making a separate meal for me when I have three children, and a schedule just didn’t happen. And it made me super stressed. The fasting worked for me. During that eight hours, I’m eating what I want (within reason), I’m even having dessert, and splurging on a fun meal. The other night I went out dinner with my girlfriends, ate too much, and had dessert, but today I’m back on the fasting. No big deal.

I will keep you posted with my progress!  Have you tried fasting?  Would you try it?
