Maleficent: Mistress of Evil- a Good Movie, but Not for Little Kids

I usually am not a fan of movies with a villain as a main character.  I wasn't even expecting to like Maleficent very much, but I did.  Maleficent: Mistress of Evil is a good movie, but it's not for little kids.  This post contains commissioned links, and by reading beyond this point you are agreeing to my updated privacy policy, found here.

Here is the rundown from Disney:

"The years have been kind to Maleficent and Aurora. Their relationship, born of heartbreak, revenge and ultimately love, has flourished. Yet the hatred between man and the fairies still exists. Aurora’s impending marriage to Prince Phillip is cause for celebration in the kingdom of Ulstead and the neighboring Moors, as the wedding serves to unite the two worlds. When an unexpected encounter introduces a powerful new alliance, Maleficent and Aurora are pulled apart to opposing sides in a Great War, testing their loyalties and causing them to question whether they can truly be family."

Maleficent is only rated PG, so why would I say that it isn't little kid friendly?  Well, I brought my two oldest children (7 & 9) and they were scared at times.  It isn't scary much, but it's very intense.  I was very glad that my five year old wasn't there, as she would have been in my bed for a week.

Here is a video review from my oldest (with no spoilers).

Now for the good stuff. It was a departure from the Sleeping Beauty story in a really interesting way.  It turns the notion of what is good and evil, on its head.  It did beat that dead horse about the human race being evil, and destroying everything in nature.  At this point, I just roll my eyes at the Hollywood rhetoric, but still enjoy the film.

Angelina Jolie is stunning.  I swear she doesn't age.  The costumes, and special effects are just beyond.  Very, very cool.  She also had an amazing array of wardrobe changes, very smart to build that into the contract Angelina.  I appreciated it!

My only real criticism is that its too long.  A few things could have been deleted, and nothing would be missed. There were no bad words, and only mildly inappropriate dressing.  I really didn't need to see so much of the fairy's boobs-HA!

Overall I would say if you have brave kids, or if they are older-go see it.  It's a fun romp and perfect for the Halloween season.
