What's In My Makeup Bag: Natural and Non-Toxic Makeup

It has taken me YEARS to find more natural and non-toxic makeup products that actually work.      I'm finding new options all the time, and I like to share what I am using!  Why have I made the switch?  It all started when I was pregnant with my first child.  My OB gave me an entire list of ingredients that shouldn't be in the products I was using.  That got me thinking, "Why was it safe when I'm not pregnant?"  After a little bit of research, I went home and threw away hundreds of dollars of expensive makeup.  I'm talking Bobbi Brown and MAC.  It was painful, but I haven't looked back.

It's been a lot of trial and error to find what works for me

Why Natural and Organic Makeup?

As I have slide down the slippery slope of switching to clean products in our home, I became aware of all of the harmful ingredients that we are exposed to from everyday items.  Hold onto your hats folks, it’s a lot.  If you want to read more about it, this is a quick article in the Guardian (from the UK).  Essentially we allow all but 11 ingredients, and the EU has outlawed about 1300.  Things like formaldehyde are still allowed in our nail polish, and parabens are in pretty much everything.

You can read more about Safe Cosmetics here.

So what do we do?

One of the things we can do is download an app from the EWG.

The Environmental Working Group has created "think dirty," an app to easily check the ingredients in your products.  The next time you buy something, scan the barcode to see how the product measures up.  It is super easy to type in anything that you want to check. I do it all the time!  One of the easiest things you can do is check out your cosmetics and personal care items before you buy them again.

Pay attention to ingredients.

Even if you don’t have the app, just being aware of some ingredients will help.  For example, look for a company, like Beautycounter, that has a "never" list.  This is a list on the product that says boldly, "We never use parabens, or coal tar products."  You are looking for transparency.  Any company that will not disclose the ingredients of “fragrance,” is mostly looking to hide a bunch of toxic crap that they don’t have to legally disclose.  Beware of any company that will not tell you exactly what you are buying.

Vote with your dollars.

Just stop buying it.  Buy the safer options.  Companies pay attention to the bottom line.  For example,  there are now clean products at Sephora, both in-stores and online.  Finally, a huge company like Sephora is paying attention to the fact that we want clean beauty.  Tampax released a line of organic cotton period products.  They recognize that a large number of women no longer want a bunch of chemicals in their personal care products.  The same goes with processed food, but that is a post for another time.

What’s in my cosmetic case, that is natural and non toxic?

Other Beauty Brands I Like

This is the good news.  There are a lot. No matter your skin type, there are so many companies making beauty products that do not have these ingredients.  The main brand I use is Tarte. Tarte works well and I can get it on sale.  I also like Mineral Fusion. Everything they make is EWG verified.  I only share Mineral Fusion products I use regularly because not all of it performs well for me.

Here is another post about my five minute face, and other makeup products I have used.

What about the price point? Tarte makes natural beauty products with natural ingredients, but they have a luxury beauty price point.  Don’t worry, I am always looking for affordable natural makeup.  The good news is that they have GREAT sales.  Get on the mailing list, and stock up when they have a major sale.

You can read more about natural deodorants that won’t make you break out.  I have performed a rigorous two day stink test to make this list!

I know that you are probably wondering about skin care, and if you follow me on instagram, you know that I have been trying Mychelle for awhile.  I can honestly say that my skin is very clear and very happy.  The post is coming, but I will leave you a little preview of what my (very quick) skin-care beauty routine, and sun protection regimen looks like.

Don’t hesitate to reach out if you have questions, and let me know your favorite natural, and non toxic beauty products!
