New Year, New Boobs. My mastectomy reconstruction options and what I chose.

Yeah, yeah, I know it's a crazy title.  But both will be true!  I finally am at an end (hopefully) of this mastectomy journey.  I will finally get rid of the awful expanders, and get some real foobs (fake boobs).  For sure a New Year, New Boobs. HA!  This post may contain affiliate links and you can read more about my privacy policy here.

Pre foobs

In case you are new to my saga, a couple of months ago I had a prophylactic mastectomy.

You can read about it here, but that means I don't have cancer.  I am doing this as a preventative.  The surgery was rough, the recovery wasn't awesome.  I was supposed to get the new boobs at the same time as surgery, but my doctor was being careful with my fragile skin.  You can read more about that hot mess here.

The expanders are very hard, and pretty darn uncomfortable.

To a certain extent, I have gotten used to them, but they kinda suck.  I will be glad to see them go.  Plus, being a card-carrying member of the metal implant club isn't super fun when traveling.  "No sir.  I am not concealing a weapon.  Those are my foobs."

The next step is the reconstruction, and I have to tell you I have had a hard time figuring out what I want to do.

There are choices in breast implants.

I am just going to tell you about them whether you want to know or not...the first option is a teardrop shape.  The other is the round that you have seen everywhere.  Here is a video (not my surgeon)  explaining the difference.

The next option is textured or smooth.  There is a small risk of developing lymphoma with the textured implants.  Admittedly, it is a small risk, but I am doing this to prevent cancer.  SOOOOOOO.  I went with a smooth surface implant.  That immediately gets rid of the option of the teardrop shaped implant.  Super bummer, but without the texture they move.  You don't want a shaped implant moving around in there, that means more surgery to correct it.

So, there you have it!  I am going to have a smooth, round, implant.

Here is the nitty gritty. They will go over the muscle, as opposed to most that go under.  I have no breast tissue, so these bad boys will never look real.  They are going to try to do some fat grafting, so I won't have the craze edge that I have shown you guys on my facebook videos.  I just hope that the random person out there who sees me will NOT notice my boobs.  I hope that I like the way they look in the mirror, because right now?  NOPE.  I liked my boobs before, it makes me a little sad.  They did good work, fed my three kids, but bye Felicia.

I will have drains again (Oh joy), and the poor doctor may have had a crying me in the office when he told me.  Ah well, I am not a bad ass all of the time.  The other thing is the scars.  They are ugly.  Not very different from what regular implant scars look like, but a bit longer.  If you see me in a bathing suit, or a bit of a racy dress, and you see scars?  Either pretend you don't see them, or ask me.  Clearly, I don't mind sharing.  Ha! I am looking forward to being done...

  5. If the makers of family fortunes dared to say 'sex toys' as one of their word association questions - my guess is 'vibrators', 'dildos' and 'the rabbit' would be amongst people's top answers. You might ask what these toys have in common. love dolls
