Everything you need to know about a Family Trip to the Gaylord National Resort

We love to travel.  Sometimes, it just isn't feasible to take a big trip with the family.  I have a birthday coming up next week, and it is the end of the school year, so we decided to check out The Gaylord National Resort and SummerFest, which goes until September 3.

The National Harbor has a lot of fun to offer, from the Capital Wheel (ferris wheel), the MGM National Harbor casino, the great shops and restaurants on the Harbor, to the Tanger Outlets not five minutes away.  I scored a pretty cute dress at the JCrew Factory outlet, and am psyched!  This is our first time staying at the hotel (I have only been here for conferences), and was really excited to share it with the kids.

The Gaylord has a ton to do with the kids for all seasons, with the indoor pool, and the splash pad.  It had been raining, so we weren't prepared for getting wet.  I just let the kids go in their clothes, because MEMORIES!

When it started pouring, we participated (but didn't complete because my youngest had a nap-time meltdown) in the scavenger hunt that is a part of SummerFest.  I was bummed because it seemed like a lot of fun, and the prize is a chance to win an overnight stay!

We decamped for naptime in our rooms, and then had a delicious dinner at National Pastimes Sports Bar and Grill.  This may sound silly, but because they had TV's with sports, my hubby and I actually got the chance to chat and enjoy our dinner.  The kiddos really liked the Mac and Cheese.  I tried it, and it was tasty.

After dinner we participated in the SummerFest National Haunting Ghost Tour.  Not scary, just informative.  We walked around the harbor area, while our guide told imaginative stories that had all of the kids entertained.

Just after that ended, we headed to the stunning atrium area for the Great American Road Trip atrium show.  It is a laser light, and music, fountain show.  My kiddos danced and were entranced, while we relaxed on the giant bean bags that were there just for the shows.

After that we stayed to watch some, and I repeat, some of the Movie Under the Stars.  Every Saturday, they show a movie in the atrium under the stars.  Everyone sits on beanbags and as it isn't outside, we didn't get eaten by bugs.  WIN.  And wine. My hubby was pretty pleased with the beer he enjoyed while the kiddos lounged.

So Magical

It was getting late, so we headed to the room.  But wait.  SILENT DISCO.  We walked by the Lobby Bar and noticed all of these people wearing headphones and DANCING.  My kids freaked.  It was sooo much fun, and the perfect way to burn off all of that energy before bedtime.

As we kept the kids up late, they obviously slept in.  NOT.  They were up by 7:30.  That's ok, they also had plentiful coffee.  Ha!  We headed down to probably the best buffet breakfast I have ever had at Pienza Marketplace.  As part of SummerFest, kids eat free at Pienza with the purchase of an adult meal per child.

Full of breakfast, we strolled around the Harbor, and finally were able to get on the Capital Wheel.  Obviously I bought the obligatory photo.  The kids had a fantastic time, while I practiced all of my yoga breathing due to the heights.  I'm super brave...

Absolutely no pictures of my bravery

We can't wait to go back.  I want to take them back to do the pirate ship and eat at one of the cute little restaurants on the water this summer.  It wasn't possible for us to enjoy all of the festivities that they offer for SummerFest, so you can find out more here.
